24 Hour Fast To Support Justice for Guantanamo Prisoners Press Release Past Events Fast to Support Justice for Guantanamo Prisoners Peace & Justice calls for hunger‑strike fast ROCKLAND – Members of the Midcoast Peace & Justice Group ask the community to join them in supporting CODEPINK's request for a global 24‑hour hunger strike in support of justice for Guantanamo prisoners by fasting on Friday, May 10. More than 100 of the 166 detainees at Guantanamo — 86 of whom have been cleared for release – are on a hunger strike, and many are being force‑fed. CODEPINK, a women‑initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement, is calling on citizens concerned about the forced feeding and the continued existence of Guantanamo to take a pledge to fast for 24 hours and also to make phone calls and make online comments to the White House, the U.S. Southern Command and the Department of Defense during meal times. The President of the American Medical Association, Dr. Jeremy Lazarus, has called forced feeding unethical and inhumane. The United Nations Human Rights Commission considers the practice of force-feeding – in which detainees are strapped to a restraining chair, have tubes pushed up their nostrils and liquids pumped down their throats – a clear form of torture. Members of the Midcoast Peace & Justice Group have pledged to fast and also make their concerns known in Washington via phone calls and online comments. The local advocacy group calls on all like‑minded citizens of the Midcoast to join them in these actions on May 10 and plan to gather at Chapman Park on the southwest corner of Park and Main Streets from 12 noon to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 6 p.m. to support justice for Guantanamo prisoners For details of the CODEPINK fasting pledge, visit www.codepink4peace.org.
